Although Sardinia wasn’t directly involved in the phenomenon of Greek colonization in the western Mediterranean, trade connections with Greece are attested by imported products found in the island. Between the last decades of the 6th century and the 4th century BC also Attic pottery arrived in Sardinia, even if in a low quantity comparing to other regions of Italy (for example Etruria) or to the Iberian peninsula. The majority of the Attic vessels were found in the main Phoenician and Punic settlements located in south-western Sardinia, as well as in the internal areas related to them. The present paper will focus in particular on black and red-figure Attic vessels, characterized as usual by the presence of images and figurative scenes. The interest of local purchasers for these imported containers is particularly intriguing considering the lack of peculiarimagery in indigenous pottery and, in general, in local craft production. The purpose of this research is to examine the vase shapes selected by Sardinian people and their function, to discuss the role of Attic pottery in some specific archaeological contexts and to evaluate the meaning eventually given to the images elaborated in Athenian workshops by local not Greek users. |
