In the process of reception Romanian literature and the poet Mihai Eminescu in Hungarian language, an important role is held by the German language and the personality of Queen Elizabeth of Romania. At the end of the 19th century, the reception of the poet Mihai Eminescu in Hungarian language also took place through the German language. In the 19th century, it was a known practice used Hungarian writers translated works by authors of universal literature, through another language, not directly from the original work. Also, during the Habsburg Empire and then in the dualistic period, the knowledge and use of the German language by Hungarian intellectuals was a natural thing. As early as 1878, the first translations of Eminescu's poems were in German, under the signature of Queen Elizabeth of Romania and the writer Carmen Sylva. Through her writing activity and translations, Carmen Sylva influenced the understanding and reception of Romania's image in the German-speaking cultural space. She also played an important role in promoting Romanian culture and literature in Europe from 1880 until the end of the First World War. |
