The present study examines the use of communication strategies based on the introversion-extroversion dimension of the personality and the English proficiency level. Corder [3] recognizes communication strategies as the systematic techniques used by the speakers when faced with a difficulty in expressing the intended meaning. Moreover, personality and language proficiency are considered to be two of the five factors that influence the use of Communication Strategies. Moreover, while there are many CSs related taxonomies, the present study used the one introduced by Dornyei and Scott [4] which divides CSs into direct, interactional and indirect strategies. The participants of the study included 32 Human resource management undergraduates who were divided into four groups based on their personality type and their level of language proficiency. Moreover, three communication tasks were conducted with the participants as means of eliciting communication which was then recorded and transcribed for the purpose of identifying the communication strategies used. The results of the study suggests that the impact of personality type and proficiency level on the use of direct, interactional and indirect strategies manifest significant differences. |
