The descendants of the Romanian lower nobility from Arad, who until recently were in the shadow of the communist regime, did not forget about their roots and managed to find written evidence among archival documents confirming their noble origin. Until recently, their world was considered lost, but researchers have managed to restore some biographical data. The Romanian intellectual elite of the generation of the Great Union, who lived at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, being guided by high moral principles formed in the conditions of polyethnicism, multilingualism and multi-confessionalism, was a model of moral and professional behavior. The generation that came from the ranks of the Romanian lower nobility, ennobled by the Transilvanian princes and having privileges confirmed by the Hapsburgs, in turn gave birth to a generation of intellectuals – priests, pedagogues, teachers, lawyers. Several families, chosen not by chance – Ioja, Luțai, Vancu, Lazăr – have shaped the universe of the small nobility which affirmed itself in the rural world of Arad and Zărad counties and contributed to the strengthening of Greater Romania. The historical and genealogical evidence recorded along time or preserved by the members of these families has made it possible to trace certain life stories. These families are rooted in the past, entrenched in the present and left a priceless legacy for us and for future generations. Communist times consigned them to oblivion, and the memory of their origins, deeds and decisions has faded. Our research briefly recreates forgotten facts from the history of the Romanian intellectual elite. |
