In this paper I tried to illustrate some of sides of the life of the child that have Down syndrome starting by defining the syndrome, relating to the changing of the attitudes against Down syndrome, sharing the results of few researches that investigate the effect of the down syndrome child on family life. Researches relate the strategies of copping with Down syndrome and finally suggest some interventions with families and demands that guarantee the success. According to researches the factors that influence the wellbeing of parents are largely the same as those influencing any child or family. The majority of families do not exhibit pathology as a consequence of having a child with Down syndrome. Indeed the evidence points to positive effects for many families when one member has Down syndrome. The results also emphasize the diversity of families and individuals with Down syndrome. Some families and children with Down syndrome are vulnerable and risky. The research has begun to identify who these may be and suggest possible directions for the more effective support and intervention. The research has emphasized the wide range of individual differences between and within the families and between the children themselves. Consequently generalized statements and assumptions based on the fact that Down syndrome is present should be avoided. |
