The article presents data about a kiln discovered by chance in Calarasi town in the spring of 2014 and some written information about the development of production of clay building materials in this region in the 19th century. Given the fact that it is situated beneath a house (owned by Nicolae and Olga Matei), the kiln has been only partly unveiled and researched. It represents a furnace of big dimensions buit of briks and clay within a rectangualr pit in plan, which has 3,1 m in width and an unspecified length. The construction system of the kiln is represented by several segments built from bricks, separated by transversal hot air circulation channels. Each segment represents two joined semi-cylindrical brick-made galeries built radially or horizontally. Given the size and the form of the kiln, as well as the incompletly burnt bricks found inside, the authors believe that the furnace had been used to burn bricks. Analysing the pottery and other elements, the authors believe that the kiln dates back the 19th century, the most probably its second half. The vestiges discovered in Calarasi have prompted the investigation of some historical publications and documentary sources in order to discover more information about the kiln. Thus, the data obtained during the research complemented our knowledge of the economic life of Calarasi as a village and a market place in the modern and interwar period and corroborated archeological observations about the period when the kiln was operational. An important argument for the proposed chronological framework is the information found about a small brick factory that existed on the estate of nobleman Matei Derojinschii, an owner from Tuzura and Calarasi at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. |
