The Costești-Gârlea medieval urban settlement did not receive appropriate attention of the specialists, although it is of particular interest for the Medieval archaeology of the Prut-Dniester region. The site is located on the southeastern periphery of the village (Gârlea natural landmark), on the both sides of the Botna River, with a length of about 2,5 km and a width over 1,5 km. Reported in the 20th century, this valuable archaeological site was researched through limited excavations in 1934, 1954, 1957, 1959, 1978, 1979, 1993 and 2005. Considering the special scientific value of the Costești-Gârlea archaeological ensemble and the fact that certain areas of the urban settlement are damaged by landslides or some unauthorized earthworks, since 2016 the National Agency for Archaeology carried out inspections and rescue research. The excavations consisted of two small sections and a trench with a total area of about 75 sq. m. The first two sections were performed on the left bank of the Botna River, in the area of an illegally dug ditch, and the trench – in the “potter’s quarter”, above the northern bank of the former clay quarry. In the northeastern section of the city there were found two hollow dwellings and five house pits and in the survey of the “potter’s quarter“ – a limestone burning furnace and a part of a hollow dwelling. As a result of the rescue excavations and surveys, there have been found more than 50 bronze and silver coins, some bronze and glass ornaments, several iron pieces, a fragmentary grinder stone, a few whetstones , a rich collection of ceramics and faunistic remnants. The absolute majority of these discoveries are attributed to the period of existence of the Golden Horde town, which dated back grosso modo to the second half of the 13th-14th century. Some materials, however, belong to other historical epochs: late bronze, the first Iron Age, the early Migration Period or the late Middle Ages. |
